Revised Definitions
Agora is a main gathering place in a city. It is where everyone gathers for activities, sports, etc. Also where meetings are held. Arete is a saying that the Greeks always said and followed. The saying means "excellence of any kind". Polis was a main city state in ancient Greece. Being part of the polis meant you were expected to vote and participate in meetings. The year 508 BC is when ancient Greece formed a democracy. This was the first democracy to ever be formed. Socrates was a philosopher. He talked to the people in towns about what he believed in. It was said that he worshiped false god; but this wasn't the only bad thing he did. He was arrested and had a trial for these thing. He was found guilty and sentenced to death by hemlock. He took the poison and drank it willingly; letting the people know that he wasn't going to change his ways just to live. He wanted to be brave and also to show people that it is important to have your own beliefs. The Socratic method was a method to help people learn faster. Socrates would ask people very hard and confusing questions to help them to learn. If they could understand and answer the question, they could learn.
